A meeting of the Central Commission for elections and referenda in Turkmenistan was held
A meeting of the Central Commission for Elections and Referendums in Turkmenistan took place on July 9, 2024. Based on reports on the work done by the chairman of the Ashgabat city election commission and responsible representatives for working with national observers, the agenda included issues related to summarizing, approving, and announcing the results of the elections of prematurely vacated deputies of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan in electoral districts No. 1 "Garaşsyzlyk," No. 2 "Bitaraplyk," and No. 6 "Köpetdag," which took place on July 7, 2024. As noted at the meeting, the elections held in the three electoral districts of Ashgabat were conducted based on democratic principles and in conditions of alternativeness, openness, and transparency, and became a vivid testament to the triumph of democratic reforms initiated during the Revival of a New Epoch of a Powerful State, on the initiative of the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan, Hero Arkadag Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, and implemented under the leadership of the esteemed President Serdar Berdimuhamedov. During the election campaign, all events related to the electoral process were conducted timely and in accordance with national legislation and generally accepted international standards. Voting at 60 polling stations located within the electoral districts was organized from 07:00 to 19:00. Early voting took place from June 27 to July 6, 2024, from 08:00 to 18:00. Both before and during the elections, voter turnout was a key characteristic of the socio-political event. In this regard, in the elections held in electoral districts No. 1 "Garaşsyzlyk," No. 2 "Bitaraplyk," and No. 6 "Köpetdag," out of 86,641 registered voters, 79,121 voters cast their votes. This means that 91.32 percent of citizens eligible to vote participated in the elections. During the meeting, the chairman of the Ashgabat city election commission reported on the work done to summarize the election results. According to the Electoral Code and based on democratic principles, three candidates were registered for each seat in the three electoral districts, indicating that the elections were held on an alternative basis. As a result, out of nine candidates, three were elected as deputies of the Mejlis, having received the majority of votes from the participating voters. In accordance with the current legislation, the list of elected candidates will be available to the public in the coming days. All stages of the election-related events were observed by 76 national observers appointed by political parties and public organizations of Turkmenistan. Reports from representatives of political parties and central public organizations responsible for national observers on the results of election monitoring were also heard. National observers emphasized that, according to available data, the elections were conducted at a high organizational level and without any violations. At the end of the meeting, the chairman of the Central Election Commission, addressing the participants, expressed gratitude to those who participated in organizing the elections for the prematurely vacated deputies of the Mejlis in the three districts of Ashgabat, including media representatives for promptly providing information during the election campaign and their responsible participation in its organization.
