Turkmenistan to host TESC 2025 International scientific-practical conference
Turkmenistan has taken up the baton of global environmental dialogue by announcing the holding of the International scientific conference on Environmental aspects of hydrocarbon resources extraction (TESC 2025) on June 5, 2025, World Environment Day. This decision was a logical continuation of our country's decisive commitment to the global environmental agenda and followed the participation of the President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov in the first ever Central Asia-European Union summit and the key international climate forum "Central Asia in the Face of Global Climate Challenges: Consolidation for Common Prosperity", held in Samarkand, Republic of Uzbekistan. Speaking at the forum, the President of Turkmenistan emphasized that climate issues "traditionally occupy a special place in the Central Asia-European Union format", emphasizing the need for joint regional actions. "Our task today is to identify priority areas of cooperation and lay a solid foundation for their implementation," said the head of state Serdar Berdimuhamedov, outlining the foundation for future and This scientific conference, which will be held in Ashgabat, will become a leading platform for promoting innovation and international cooperation in the field of sustainable development of the hydrocarbon sector. Organized by the State Concerns Türkmengaz and Türkmennebit, TESC 2025 is designed to accelerate progress at the intersection of energy production and environmental responsibility. And the participation of international organizations such as the UN, OSCE, World Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Asian Development Bank (ADB), Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), International Energy Agency (IEA) and International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) will ensure the integration of discussions into the global context of sustainable development. TESC 2025 will bring together government officials, scientific experts, business leaders and representatives of international environmental organizations from around the world. Their common goal is to develop practical solutions for environmentally responsible hydrocarbon production in order to provide the global energy market with reliable, sustainable and clean energy. It is no coincidence that the motto of the upcoming conference will be "Reliable, Sustainable, Clean Energy", embodying the desire for an environmentally responsible future. In this regard, the importance of the TAPI transnational gas pipeline is obvious. The National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Hero Arkadag, speaking on March 19 at the International Conference "International Year of Peace and Trust: the Role of Interregional Cooperation in Ensuring Sustainable Development", emphasized the important geopolitical and geoeconomic significance of the TAPI project. "The Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline is one of the significant projects. Its goal is to provide natural gas to countries with a total population of 1 billion 750 million people in the modern era,” said Hero Arkadag. In 2023, at COP28 in Dubai, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov announced the country's accession to the Global Methane Commitment and put forward an initiative to open a UN Regional Center for Climate Change Technologies in Central Asia in Turkmenistan. Our country's commitment to global climate efforts was also emphasized, including through key national strategies, such as the updated Climate Change Strategy and the approved Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) of Turkmenistan under the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, which provides for a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. To implement these initiatives, a Roadmap for 2023-2026 was approved under the leadership of the President of Turkmenistan, aimed at fulfilling international obligations. "The implementation of Turkmenistan's environmental initiatives - such as the creation of the Regional Center for Climate Change Technologies and the transition to a circular economy - should become our common priority," the head of state noted at the summit in Samarkand, calling on the entire world for more active cooperation. In this regard, it should be noted that monitoring and reducing methane and greenhouse gas emissions are carried out within the framework of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the National Climate Change Strategy and the Paris Agreement. Since March 2024, systematic collection of satellite-based methane emissions data has been launched in cooperation with UNEP on the MARS platform. According to MARS data, from June 2024 to February 2025, the analysis showed impressive results: in November and December 2024, methane emissions reached zero, especially in the Darvaza crater. Without a doubt, these achievements will be an important contribution to the TESC 2025 agenda, clearly demonstrating Turkmenistan’s success in addressing environmental challenges. Turkmenistan’s progress in fulfilling its commitments is also confirmed by independent data. The KAYRROS report entitled “The Global Methane Pledge, Three Years On - Partial Progress Report” notes: “Turkmenistan’s aggregate methane emissions from its Eastern and Western producing regions, despite a brief increase in 2021, have been trending lower since that peak, even as oil and gas production has been on the rise. Aggregate emissions for 2023 were down by 10% versus 2020, a slightly steeper reduction than the 9% notional cut required in a linear progression towards 2030 targets”. Thus, Turkmenistan's success in reducing methane emissions is obvious, and these results will be an important example for discussions at TESC 2025, where new steps to achieve climate goals will be presented. Turkmenistan's hosting of TESC 2025 comes at a time when the world urgently needs leadership and innovation in the fight against climate change. By aligning energy policy with environmental priorities, the country is forming a new model of cooperation and global interaction. As the President of Turkmenistan emphasized: "Only together, in solidarity and unity, we can overcome the global challenges of our time." Registration for the International Scientific and Practical Conference TESC 2025 is now open. Last year, the forum attracted 250 delegates from 31 countries. The conference will be a major event for professionals in the oil and gas industry, providing a unique platform for knowledge and experience exchange. Participation in the forum is free of charge, and international delegates are provided with free visa support. Registration is available on the official TESC 2025 website.
