A ceremony of handing over passports to persons who have been granted citizenship of Turkmenistan was held in Ashgabat
Yesterday, on September 25, on behalf of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, a solemn ceremony of handing over passports to persons who have been granted citizenship of Turkmenistan took place at the State Migration Service. This significant event, timed to coincide with the national holiday – the 33rd anniversary of the independence of the Motherland, was a reflection of our country's unwavering commitment to the norms of international humanitarian law. According to the Decree signed by the Head of state at an expanded meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, 1,146 people became citizens of Turkmenistan – representatives of 29 nationalities permanently residing in our country. In addition, according to the Decree of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, 134 persons who are citizens of 6 states and representatives of 15 nationalities have been granted residence permits in Turkmenistan. Signing these documents, the Head of state noted that effective measures are being implemented in our Homeland in the field of protection of human rights and freedoms on the basis of generally recognized norms of international law. During the solemn ceremony of handing over passports, the participants expressed their deep gratitude to President Serdar Berdimuhamedov for the great attention paid to solving the problems of stateless persons and creating all conditions for their prosperous life. It was noted that the humanitarian direction is one of the components of the domestic and foreign policy of Turkmenistan, which was among the first in the region to pay close attention to this issue. Over the years, according to the Decrees of the President of the country, 30 thousand 988 people living in our homeland and at the same time not being citizens of any state have been admitted to the citizenship of Turkmenistan. To date, 5 thousand 18 foreign citizens and stateless persons have received a residence permit in Turkmenistan. By joining the main international legal documents of the United Nations, including the Conventions "On the Status of Refugees", "On the Status of Stateless Persons", "On the Reduction of Statelessness", Turkmenistan in fact confirms its commitment to its obligations. This is evidenced by the implementation of the norms of international humanitarian law into national legislation, the holding of representative forums dedicated to stateless persons and other relevant migration issues. Thus, the current event has once again confirmed our country's unwavering commitment to the generally accepted norms of international law, the promotion of regional and global humanistic initiatives put forward by Head of State Serdar Berdimuhamedov.
