Presentation of the Global Population Report 2024 Held in Ashgabat

The presentation of the Global Population Report 2024, coinciding with World Population Day celebrated annually on this date, took place on July 11 at the "Ýyldyz" Hotel in the capital. The event was organized by the joint efforts of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Representation in Turkmenistan and the Government of our country. Participants included members of the Mejlis, representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, various ministries and departments, the Academy of Public Administration under the President of Turkmenistan, the Institute of State, Law, and Democracy, the National Red Crescent Society, media representatives, as well as heads of diplomatic missions from foreign states accredited in our country. As highlighted by the speakers, the broad celebration of World Population Day, established by a special resolution of the UN General Assembly in December 1990, is crucial for drawing the international community's attention to pressing population issues within the context of global and national development plans and programs, as well as seeking solutions to common problems. The Global Population Report 2024, titled "Intertwined Destinies, Threads of Hope: Eliminating Inequality in Reproductive Health and Rights," aims to address these issues. The document provides an overview of the current global situation and the challenges faced by people in different countries, highlighting issues of paramount importance to humanity. This primarily concerns the empowerment of women in the area of reproductive health. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo, where a fundamental global agreement was signed, committing to better health, rights, and choices for all. This priority task has led to significant progress in this direction and has been included in the global Sustainable Development Agenda for the period up to 2030. As noted in the speeches, the peaceful foreign policy course of Turkmenistan, initiated by the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Hero-Arkadag, and successfully continued by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, aimed at strengthening the foundations of universal security and broad international cooperation, has predetermined the fruitful nature of our country's interaction with UN agencies, which act as long-term strategic partners in addressing current issues. In this context, the exceptional productivity of joint work within the framework of the "Framework Program for Cooperation in Sustainable Development between Turkmenistan and the UN for 2021–2025," which outlines the main vectors of interaction between the Government of Turkmenistan and UN agencies accredited in the country, including UNFPA, taking into account national interests and socio-economic development priorities, was emphasized. Noting the successes achieved by Turkmenistan in the field of public health, ensuring gender equality, and creating favorable living conditions, expanding the rights and opportunities of people, representatives of the United Nations Population Fund emphasized their readiness to comprehensively enhance the established fruitful cooperation and provide full support in the development, adoption, and implementation of population policies and development strategies. An example of successful cooperation is the technical assistance provided by UNFPA to the State Statistics Committee of Turkmenistan in preparing and conducting the 2022 population and housing census, as well as in implementing the National Strategy for Reproductive Health and the Health of Mothers, Newborns, Children, and Adolescents for 2020–2030, the National Action Plan for Gender Equality for 2021–2025, and others. Thus, the United Nations Population Fund acts as a constant partner in implementing numerous joint projects and programs aimed at addressing Turkmenistan's priority development tasks, closely linked to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. Regular consultations, seminars, and conferences are held, providing an open platform for exchanging views on a wide range of issues and developing effective measures to strengthen the established constructive dialogue. During today's event, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan and the United Nations Population Fund, confirming the mutual interest of the parties in further cooperation to achieve common goals.
